MILA MAIA
ABOUT

Mila Maia is a flutist, pianist and composer whose work explores the meeting point of musical traditions. She works across classical music, Choro, Flamenco, Tango and Traditional Irish Music, developing projects that balance written composition, improvisation and collaborative performance.
She completed an MA in Composition and Creative Music Practice at the Irish World Academy, University of Limerick, where she further developed her work for concert and film. Based between Italy and Ireland, she works as a music tutor and serves as pianist-in-residence at Silent Cinema Galway. She is a recipient of the Creative Practitioner Bursary from Galway City Council, supporting the creation of new original music.
A significant strand of her practice is composing and performing live scores for silent film. In 2025, she created a new soundtrack for the closing screening of The Passion of Joan of Arc at the Galway Silent Film Festival. Her film work has also been presented at Dublin International Film Festival and Solax Film Club.
Alongside her solo releases, Mila collaborates with musicians from different countries and traditions. She is currently the flautist of Latin-trad band Baile An Salsa and has worked with Agustina Taborda, Javi Campos, Kevin Shortall, Treo Ensemble, Galway Choro Ensemble and Sonanta Flamenco-Jazz.
With a long-standing connection with Irish traditional music, she has performed with trad bands at festivals across Europe and Brazil, and held a weekly residency at Bierhaus Galway for over three years bringing Irish music to local audiences. Earlier in her career, she co-founded the band Oran and the digital magazine O Pint Diário, and served on the committee of Comhaltas Brasil, contributing to the development of Irish traditional music in Brazil.
